Penn State Health St. Joseph is a two-campus health system with outpatient locations and physician offices throughout Berks County and beyond. This non-profit healthcare network consists of a 204-bed Medical Center, a Downtown Campus, a Medical Group, a Physician Hospital Organization and a Foundation. The system has 2,000 employees, 400 physicians, $280 million in annual operating revenue and is experiencing growth in services lines and in surgical volumes. PSHSJ offers a full range of outpatient/inpatient diagnostic, medical and surgical services across its enterprise, supporting 47,000 ER visits and 7,500 inpatient admissions annually.
St. Joseph is part of Penn State Health, a $2.3 billion health care enterprise consisting of five hospitals, including one academic medical center/college of medicine, and 57 multispecialty outpatient clinics across nine counties in central Pennsylvania. Penn State Health and Highmark Health (one of the largest health insurance companies in PA) entered into a strategic partnership in 2017 to focus on improving access, quality and affordability of health care for patients and their families across south central Pennsylvania.
This is an exciting opportunity to lead a valued and well-respected community hospital forward in the changing world of health care reform and create a clear growth strategy which marries effectively with the shared vision of the newly formed regional health care system, Penn State Health. Seeking a growth-oriented executive to continue driving cultural transformation in a multi-faceted environment.
The President will be responsible for strategic direction and executive level leadership, including the planning and organization of day-to-day operations, managing and developing staff, assuring high quality care, sound fiscal operations, maintaining a strong physician referral base, supporting board governance and compliance with Joint Commission, CMS and PA DOH regulations, while continually improving and growing the facility’s services and delivery system.
The successful candidate must hold a master’s degree in Hospital and/or Healthcare Administration, or related field, with 5+ years of executive-level experience. Prior experience in a hospital that is part of a health system is desired. Community hospital leadership experience is valued, as is multi-hospital leadership experience. Experience supporting underserved communities and working with a diverse population is highly desirable. Experience within a faith-based environment, with an understanding of Catholic ethical and religious directives, is helpful. Success in growing revenues, improving satisfaction/engagement, building teams, developing positive physician relationships and communicating effectively is important.

The area is home to many distinguished higher education and vocational/technical institutions and top ranked public and private schools. Reading is conveniently located near Philadelphia, Baltimore, and New York City. With a 60- to 90-minute drive in either direction, residents can enjoy big city excitement, beaches or mountains.
